Description

Early 1900s Hawaiian Alaia Plank 5’ 0”

This 1930’s Alaia was discovered in a neighborhood near Waikiki, Hawaii. Condition is all original as found.

What makes this board particularly interesting is the area that has been slightly concaved where ones knees might be placed while paddling. Not sure of the type of wood used here possibly Breadfruit ’Ulu’ because it’s quite light in both weight and color and almost certainly not redwood.

In the 1910’s photo shown below (not included) are some of the kids on Waikiki Beach with similar designed boards, Dudie Miller at center of the photo, went on to become the first commodore of the Hui Nalu Surf Club in Waikiki.

This interesting board is in very nice condition for such an old relic. Boards of similar vintage and size sold at auction in 2007 for between $10,000 to $27,000.

Pre-auction estimate: $5,000.-$8,000. No reserve
