Description

1963 Hobie-Phil Edwards Model 9' 9"

The Phil Edwards is perhaps the most prized model board among collectors today. It was the first model board to be produced and led the way for all the other companies to create their own. Numbered at #103, this awesome and significant board is the earliest number we know of. We suspect numbering may have started at 100, making this the 4th one made.

Truly an amazing find, this highly collectible board is in all original condition. By the late 1950s and early 60s, Phil Edwards was considered by many of his peers to be the best surfer in the world, consistently making harder turns on the waves than anyone else. Edwards was the first to successfully ride the famed and dangerous Bonzai Pipeline on Oahu's north shore. His second ride at Pipeline was captured by legendary surf film producer, Bruce Brown in his 1962 film Surfing Hollow Days. He also appeared in other films including Cat on a hot foam board 1959, Gun Ho 1963 and the most famous movie of all time, The Endless Summer 1966.

Everyone wanted to surf like Edwards and as such, besides the Phil Edwards model offered here, Hang Ten sportswear produced the very successful line of Phil Edwards beachwear in 1964. Edwards wrote one of the most successful books on surfing in 1967, You Should Have Been Here An Hour Ago. It's one of the most collectible surf books by collectors today.

In 1966 Phil Edwards was inducted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame and also to the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame in 1995. He was named one of the "25 Most Influential Surfers Of The Century" by Surfer magazine, with such legends as Duke Kahanamoku and Tom Blake.

This top-shelf Hobie Phil Edwards is in outstanding all original condition. The stand-out ash wood fin is incredible as is the sharp label which is still crisp looking. As you can see by the still mostly white foam, this board wasn't left in the elements much during its 45 year life. This is one of the most highly sought after and collected boards and it's still in excellent condition. Any repairs that were needed were done professionally and this museum quality board was polished to bring back its showroom luster.

These Hobie-Phil Edwards models are so coveted by collectors, its rare to see one offered for sale. The only auction record we could find was of a much later Edwards model selling six years ago in 2003, for $5,400.

This important Phil Edwards may have the lowest production number of any other in existence. You will see this primo avant-garde board featured in the full color hardcover coffee table book, Vintage Surfboards II, available later this year.

Pre-auction estimate: $5,000-$6,000. No Reserve
